What is the Purpose of the Tithe?
God ordained the tithing principle for practical purposes. It is a spiritual discipline, which was established for several important reasons. Following is a list some of the more prominent reasons for the tithe:
1. Tithing is a Means of Worship-The scripture exhorts us to “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the first fruits of all your increase” (Proverbs 3:9) First and foremost, tithing represents a practical expression of worship unto the Lord.
2. It is a Mean of Building Faith-Tithing is a means of reinforcing our confidence, faith, and dependence in God’s promise of provision and support. (Malachi 3:10)
3. It Provides Financial Support for the Ministry-The tithe represents God’s system of economic support for those called to full-time ministry. “But the tithes….I have given to the Levites” (Numbers 18:24)
4. It Provides Financial Support for the Church-It is God’s ordained method of meeting the financial needs of the church. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house” (Malachi 3:10)
